MARCHing forward

dang! it's march already! and we are totally marching ahead! and the idea for this month's theme. cydde is traveling the e.u. (and leo is getting a house guest?) and i am ready for some warm weather to hit the road on my 1977 kawasaki 400d! and possibly the best news this month, a new swapper, Graeme, will be joining us from Glasgow!
so cydde and i thought maybe we could do a 'hit the road' driving/exploring/moving on type mix, whatever that means to you. if anyone is interested in swapping this month, please leave a comment saying as such. (and we are looking to drop the mixes in the mail by the last week of the month).
and to welcome our new swap mate, i thought maybe we could write a note about ourselves to get aquatinted and help make Graeme feel welcome. happy March gang! i hope all is well.

sounds good to me that swap! I'll be in for that one! And who put that blurry pixels over that girl, shame shame!

Welcome Graeme! We already have had some contacts through e-mail since 2007 I think? So no further introduction needed I guess! Or is there anything you want to know about me? Just shoot.

good lord leo, is there anyone you don't know? everyone on earth that i've invited you know! that's amazing, you must talk to many people through the royal stable.
i too am disappointed in the pixels, the calender company censored it on their own. feel free to find a suitable replacement.
anyway i am 31, male, a louisvillian, and a music compiler. i am currently watching the first season of Dexter and am very much enjoying it. i also have a cat.
i am excited about this swap too! i am also working on adding a page so we can have a list of music we have swapped, incase new comers are interested in past swaps, we can oblige. also too remember, there has been so many albums traded in such a short amount of time!

yes john, perhaps i shall run out of music! i'm in obviously.

and hello to you graeme, welcome. you wouldn't believe how much new music you'll find through this - a lot of it of course you will know. there isn't a doubt that we all share some common tastes.

i'm currently the only female in the group, in Canberra, Australia. i too have recently moved into a house having lived in a flat most recently - i needed my own space again to grow veggies and swear as loud as i want (and not hear EVERYTHING my neighbours do!). i am not in the music industry myself, just a fan. i actually work in the non-profit sector for a national healthcare advocacy body. i think we're trying to learn a fair amount from the UK!

anyway, just ask if there's anything about anything you want to know.

Hi, and thanks for the welcomes. Leo, yes I am an acolyte of your wonderful Royal Stable website, a must for any serious Will Oldham fan - and I wear that badge!
John I know, obviously, through the superb Louisville Is For Lovers series, something else that my admiration for the Bonnie Prince led me to. Thank you, John, for the invite to this group.
Cydde, well I guess my connection to you is more obscure. I lived in Australia for a short time in the late 80s/early 90s and almost married a girl from Tasmania. I had a wonderful time there even though its location, only a mile or so from the surface of the sun, was a real shock to this pasty Caledonian boy. Ahh, memories... If I had to live anywhere else but Glasgow it'd be Melbourne, no question.
I do hope it doesn't come to that, though, as I love my city deeply. We are spoiled to have so many fine forward-thinking musicians in this country and more excellent venues than we probably deserve. I have already been inspired by just the idea of this board to start sketching out a wee Scottish welcome gift for you all. I hope that would be okay?

that sounds excellent! the one thing i never liked about reading about music, is that anything from your island is dubbed 'U.K.' and i never know what and where the good things are coming from. i'd love to hear a good Scottish/glasgow mix!
i traveled with a pretty Australian girl who lived in Edinburgh, she loved scotland and hoped to find a way to stay there forever.
what's your day job? journalist?

How did you know that, John? I work on the sports desk of a tabloid. And for a football-loving man-child it's the ideal job. I get to watch sport on the box all day, move a comma or two in other folks' copy and take a wage home at the end of the week. I amuse myself by trying to sneak as many obscure musical references as I can into my headlines. There can't be many Inverness Caley Thistle/ Althea and Donna cross references about!

ha ha! i didn't do a background check on you, i am just a little bit physic! not really, your email addy is @the-sun.co and that sounded like a news paper to me. and since you know Leo through correspondence i figured you were a music writer, but a sports writer is just as good. we do have a music editor in our midst, jeffrey, who writes for the paper louisville. football, eh? what's your take on the beckham issue? 'soccer' fans here were excited that we finally got a known footballer, but mostly people wanted a really good player over a famous player. does the U.K. feel like he let them down?
i've already got a nice start on my 'hit the road' mix, mostly songs i love listening to when speeding down winding roads on the motorbike, and songs referring to hauling ass. and today it's 16c/61f and sunny, so it's a perfect day to test out my mix!
cydde when do you leave on holiday? i wanna get my disc to you before you go.

effective for you john, it should arrive no later than 6 April. that's my last day in the office and i fly the next day.

i can't believe how warm you are, that sounds like a pleasant change! we're quite close right now, it's about 20c here.

as for melbourne graeme, you are right it's a great place. i'd like to live down there one day (presently about half way between there and sydney). i'd wager that australia has changed significantly since you were here!

John, the Beckham thing has never really involved us. It's been mostly an issue for the English media - and they're welcome to it. He straddles the line of sportsman/celebrity that's almost totally unheard of north of the border. He has never been as popular up here as when he was sent off playing for England against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup! On a personal level, I admire the guy as a footballer - I wish there were some more Scots who had his skill - and I don't think that the move to the MLS was a bad one for everyone involved, however unjustifiable the money. It's just a pity that it didn't work in the long run.
Anyway, it looks like I've got the new flat - so I'm afraid my debut as a contributor may be delayed, though I will try and get a disc burned this weekend.
Fingers crossed...
And, if you don't mind, I won't participate in the weather talk - it's bloody freezing here!

5 for march! what a welcome for graeme! and i think we'll all be well stocked for summer travel soundtracks! what's a band that reminds you of travel. lucero does for me. (actually i am in the process of piecing together a once complete lucero collection, so if anyone has anything, or would like some let me know).
there are also some other records that are just must haves on road trips. ..

It has been a hell of a welcome! Thanks again. I'm in for this swap if that's OK. I had so many other things that I should have been doing but I was really gripped by the idea of knocking a cd together.
If someone could fill me in on the etiquette of swapping I reckon I could have both the Get Moving and A Welcome From Scotland discs in the post next week.
And I got the flat...
